Yesterday marked the first outdoor photo shoot that we’ve completed in 2018 and it felt like everything was working in our favor. The weather was sunny with just a slight bit of clouds, low humidity, with a nice warm 86-degree temperature. What more could you ask for when your planning on a beach shoot at the local lake? Well for starters, not to plan a session during a time when everyone else in Ravenna also plans on using the exact same beach with their families
Yup, in my weeks of planning this intricate photo session I failed to realize that the date was the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, probably one of if not the busiest day of the year for any park, especially a beach after a long cold winter in Ohio when the weather is amazing.
Long story short, there was no way that I was going to get a single shot in the water or on the sand without at least either random beach goer walking through or a small child gazing at my camera, neither a good situation for a artistic water based modeling session so after a short meeting in the car we decided that we needed to find another location along the lake that we could possibly use. It is a big lake so shouldn’t be too hard to find a little space along the water that is unoccupied right?
Well, that did not work out either. It seems that due to the recent string of storms that we had been having there was a increased amount of runoff from the local soil turning the usual greenish blue water to fifty shades of brown. So yeah, we had to go with plan C to accomplish our “Water” session.
There was talk of going to a local store and buying a Kitty Pool which as funny as that would have been, artistically for our purposes it would have been lacking so we did the next best thing. Drove back to the office, and set up a hose behind the Outer Haven Studio and made our own water effects.
So since we could not spend our two hour session time in the cool waters of West Branch Lake where I had full plans of doing shots waist deep water if not deeper with perfect lighting we used a hose spewing freezing cold water and did a “Days of Spring” shoot with Brandy and Victoria taking turns spraying each other (possibly more then needed) and using that for at least a fresh water effect and the desired wet hair look that gave us at least a portion of what we were after.
At the end of day, no, we did not get the amazing water shots that we had attended just yet, but we did get was some great improvised shots that I am going to use heavy Photoshop on to make into something great. Being a professional photographer or model is just as much about being flexible as it is about talent and years of training.
So in conclusion, even though very little went as planned we still had a amazing shoot, a lot of fun, and got some great images which I am going to put up over the next week. Embrace the chaos and make it work to YOUR advantage. You never know what you will get otherwise.
Interested in seeing the result of the shoot or in seeing more of our work? We are going to be putting up the shoot on our Facebook at @OurOuterHaven as well as Instagram which is Our_Outer_Haven, you can also find the models accounts there as well.
We are currently booking sessions in the greater Ohio area, message for details.
